Guadalajara is Mexico's second-largest city and the cultural soul of the country — birthplace of mariachi, tequila, and charrería. Overview

Guadalajara sits at 1,500 metres in the highlands of Jalisco, giving it a near-perfect spring-like climate year-round. Its historic centre is one of Mexico's finest, anchored by a twin-towered cathedral and a sequence of plazas leading to the UNESCO-listed Hospicio Cabañas, home to José Clemente Orozco's monumental murals. Beyond the centro, neighbourhoods like Colonia Americana and Chapultepec pulse with independent cafés, craft cocktail bars, and street art, while the satellite towns of Tlaquepaque and Tonalá offer the country's best artisan shopping. Day trips to the town of Tequila, the circular pyramids of Guachimontones, and the lakeside villages of Chapala and Ajijic round out one of Mexico's most complete city-break destinations.

Why visit Guadalajara

Guadalajara combines a magnificent colonial core, José Clemente Orozco's breathtaking murals, and one of Mexico's most vibrant café and nightlife scenes with easy access to tequila country, ancient pyramids, and a lakeside expat village — all in a city with reliably beautiful weather.
