Art Nouveau District (Quiet Centre)
Riga's Art Nouveau District, known locally as the Quiet Centre, is a residential neighborhood north of the Old Town where early 20th-century architecture reaches one of its most concentrated and theatrical expressions in Europe. Alberta iela and Elizabetes iela are lined with facades decorated with grotesque masks, nymphs, and geometric ornament that give the streets a quality unlike anywhere else in northern Europe. It is quieter and more residential than the Old Town, which is precisely what makes it worth a half-day or longer.
